Younkers is an American department store chain founded as a family-run dry goods business in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa. The retailer has since evolved over more than 150 years to include a presence in locations throughout Iowa and bordering states in the Midwest region of the United States. It is pronounced the same as Yonkers, New York. Younkers became influential as it acquired several rivals throughout the 20th century both inside and outside of Iowa.
In addition to apparel, Younkers stores provided cosmetic and fragrance lines, as well as a selection of housewares, china, linens, gift items, and other merchandise. The company also sold furniture and operated restaurants in certain of its stores.
The Bon-Ton Stores Inc., with corporate headquarters in York, Pennsylvania and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, operates 254 stores, which includes nine furniture galleries, in 23 states in the Northeast, Midwest and upper Great Plains under the Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Bergner’s, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s and Younkers nameplates.
The stores offer a broad assortment of national and private brand fashion apparel and accessories for women, men and children, as well as cosmetics and home furnishings. The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. is an active and positive participant in the communities it serves.
