About the company

The story of Dents began in 1777, when John Dent established himself as a master glove maker in the cathedral city of Worcester, England. Over the following 240 years, Dents has gone on to develop a worldwide reputation as the quintessential British glove brand. It was Dents that made the Queen’s Coronation Glove over 60 years ago, and Dents gloves have appeared in TV series like Mr. Selfridge and Downton Abbey, as well as Batman and Bond movies, and most recently, the blockbuster Wonder Woman. Dent’s is the holder of a Royal Warrant from HRH the Prince of Wales and is honored to supply him and other members of the Royal family with gloves.

Our Heritage Gloves – Made In England

Dents craftsmen still make the world’s finest leather gloves in England. Their unique expression of the glovemaker’s craft can be seen by the care and attention to detail lavished on our most exclusive English made gloves. Each glove is individually bench cut and made with features and materials rarely seen today.

One example is quirks, small diamond shaped pieces of leather sewn at the base of the fingers, where they are attached to the hand of the glove to improve the fit. They are found only on the most expensive handsewn gloves. Another example is hand felling, a method of invisibly stitching the cuff of the glove to its lining which helps the glove keep its shape, and adds to its comfort.

Interesting Glove Facts
SIZING

A Frenchman, Xavier Jouvin, is the person we have to thank for today’s almost universal system for measuring the hand to establish one’s glove size. He developed the system in 1834 after more than five years researching the human hand. He discovered the most reliable method for establishing one’s glove size was by measuring the hand you write with around its widest part at the knuckles, excluding the thumb. Because finger length and thickness may vary widely, Jouvin decided hand measurements were best compared by their “mathematical width”. The measurement used was called the “Pied de Roi” or King’s Foot, which was approximately 3/4 of an inch longer than the English foot measure. Prior to 1834 and the introduction of Jouvin’s glove sizing system, there was no reliable method to establish one’s glove size, and as a consequence, many a King or Queen, or person of noble birth, could be seen wearing ill-fitting gloves.

Today, as in the past, Dents still uses Jouvin’s glove sizing method for the sizing of our fine glove collection. Dents would normally use it’s specialist glove maker’s tape measure based on Jouvin’s measurements to establish its customers’ glove sizes; however, with internet selling, this is obviously not possible.

You can easily find your glove size by using any household tape measure – see our sizing section on this website.
